YWAM - Australia Reef to Outback

“I’m married with a little girl. My husband doesn’t like that I’m a prostitute, but if I don’t sell myself, we won’t be able to afford the food we need to survive.”

This was the cry recently heard by the YWAM Reef to Outback outreach team in Bali. The most shocking thing of all? Sex with this woman will cost only around $2 AUD.

The sex industry around the world is being fed by hungry appetites at the cost of many women and children. In Bali, the situation is no different; however, the women from YWAM RTO have had the opportunity to partner with a local ministry to offer help to those suffering in such a way.

By meeting the girls on the street and sharing truth with them, they have had the opportunity to meet with girls as young as 11 years old who are selling themselves. One girl, aged 17, decided to give her life to God after speaking with the girls from the team; however, she was still without a source of income when a group of 5 boys, aged 18, showed up waiting to buy their turn with her.

In the midst of the despair, the team hopes to be able to bring alternatives for the women. One night, Ania Kossar accounts, they were talking with an older woman when 7 young men showed up, drawn by all of the white skinned girls on their teams.

“They were making really rude gestures. We ignored them,” said Ania and then recounted how they began to sing sweet songs about Jesus to the woman. “[As we were singing], I turned around and gave the ring leader a “mom look” and told him for the next song he needed to keep his guys quiet. He nodded, taken aback at my intense stare
but totally obliged.”

“While the girls kept praying for the lady I turned to the leader and his friends and started asking him questions about his life. By this time he was quite respectful with me and said I was a ‘nice lady.’ When I left I shook his hand and said, ‘You must be a nice guy and grow up to be a good man.’ He smiled.”

Indeed there is hope for both women and men as we look at how to bring a positive influence in the midst of the harmful sex industry around the world.

Yes, Pamela. $2AUD is about $1.50USD or so... its pretty shocking.

One of the things that our outreach teams do is partner with ministries on the ground in these locations who give the women a chance to do another job. They have accommodation and training in general life skills, the values of Jesus, and also a trade like hair dressing or cooking. They can also learn arts and crafts and there are several ministries who will also you to buy jewelry or cards made by these women and all the proceeds goes toward supporting them. Its very cool!

Can people help support these women so they don't have to do prostitution? You know how there are Christian organizations that ask Christians to help in monthly support for children or families. Couldn't there be one that asks for monthly support for girls who have no other way of making income but through prostitution? The article said she only gets $2 AUD. How much is that in American money?
