Emma's Experience:

When I decided to be a short term volunteer at Reef to Outback I had no idea what I was letting myself in for. It was a case of me typing ‘missions’ and ‘Australia’ into Google and their website coming up!

I arrived in Townsville on rocky grounds with God. I felt full of good intentions, wanting to give; but my passion for that always seemed to just dry up. The help that I provided in any area was only ever temporary – charity work. Charity work is awesome, no doubts, but I wanted to live a life of CARING, and since being here I have learnt that a consistent caring heart is God’s heart. His strength and overwhelming love is the provision which DRIVES that care.

That heart is clear in every aspect of Reef to Outback. From being greeted at the airport with smiles and hugs, to everyone’s constant interest in where I had been, what I was about, and how I was doing. I felt like a member of the family from day one! God’s love is infectious!

My tasks ranged from arranging and preparing buffets, making cakes, fixing bunk beds, shampooing carpets, preparing accommodation for guests, and everything possible in between! Other than the occasional cake I have baked, the other jobs were all new to me. It was such an opportunity to try out things I would never had other wise, and find that I am actually good at some of them too!

I remember a lot of people asking me during my time at the base, ‘What was your favourite area to work in?’, ‘Which job did you enjoy the most?’ I don’t think I could ever really answer those questions. It is the heart, the care and servant hood that Reef to Outback possesses that I have such a love for; the blessing that each person has been to me; and the truth that has been spoken into my life has just been overwhelming.

I came here wanting to see more of this beautiful nation and to serve others; I am leaving with SO much more!

I leave renewed. I leave not just saying words in a prayer out of duty, but KNOWING that God cares enough to listen, and to answer. Knowing that does not apply just for those around me, but actually includes me. That God’s love is not to be earned, and that we do not serve him to try and earn it. We serve him in RESPONSE to that love, in response to what he has done for us, and what he continues to do today. I leave knowing that material possessions are not what matter most, and that what does matter, God will provide. I leave knowing that we serve a LIVING God, knowing he does not just exist in The Bible; he has not just been a part of history, but that he is here with us today. I leave having witnessed his provision countless times in my life and those around me, having seen his healing touch, felt his love, and heard his voice speak the plans he has for me. I leave discovering my identity in Christ, not in the world around me.

Jeremiah 29:11

‘For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’

I do not know the plans God has for me, I do not know where I will be in 2 years time, but every step that I take, God opens the door a little more, adds another piece to the jigsaw and provides the next stepping stone for me to hop on to. The more I get to know God, the more I desire to know God and make him known to others.

God has transformed my life through Reef to Outback in ways I never thought possible.

Short Term Volunteering is not a Discipleship Training School, but that does NOT mean you don’t meet with God here in awesome ways. Every person is God’s child and totally equal. He does not love one more than another, and he wants to speak to YOU. He wants to spend time with YOU.

I recommend it to EVERYONE!
