hey, as a fellow Aussie and friend of Cherie's, i want to provide my full support for her with this question :) i was reading about buffalo wings in an american book yesterday, and i just figured they were made of buffalo. but who knew!?!? it's definitely not something you buy at the corner store in australia!

thanks for giving us some fun american insight guys!!

That is a great question Cherie. And potentially a very misleading name for the delightful little chicken treat. I've never really thought about why they are called buffalo wings. Are buffalos a spicy animal??

Here is another fact about buffalos to enlighten you further though... Back when the Native Indians used to eat buffalos, they would hunt them by chasing a herd, cornering them and running them all off a cliff where they would fall to their death below. In the thrid grade I went on a field trip to visit a historic landmark "Head Smashed in Buffalo Jump." It's basically a giant cliff with a museum. You can imagine how it got it's name...

haha yeah mike i definatly heard about that place and thats very true. buffalo werent the smartest of mammals apparantly

but to answer your question why they are called buffalo wings, is because the sauce on top of the chicken is called " buffalo sauce"
im not sure why, but yes. its pretty much spicey sauce on chicken.

ok,, I have to admit.. I've asked that question before to (a couple of times;).. I mean because why would they call them Buffalo wings?? I have no idea,, I'm sure it's thrown most of the world for loop...I just know that so many people eat them, I was beginning to have my doubts as to the authenticity of it being buffalo meat and after asking a couple people yeah, I asked, guilty on that;) .. I found out. It's probably one of the most popular things you can order in the US anyway..It's a good question, and really one of the mysteries of the American Menu..

it's a good question... one I've asked myself...I think everyone I know has asked that question if there honest, because it doesn't make sense why they would call them buffalo wings, and then them not being buffalo. Dissapointed when I found out they weren't. I guess it's kinda like a running joke here because its asked so frequently by everyone.

Y'all crack me up. Buffalo Wings are called such because the spicy sauce with which they are doused originated in Buffalo, New York. Just don't ask me how Buffalo, New York got it's name. It's not like there are many US cities named after native animals... except for Turkey, but that's not a city, and it's not in the U.S.
